My Teaching Philosophy

Having earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in flute performance with some of the best teachers, I have a lot to share about flute playing! I also have a lot to share about how to remain true to yourself as you pursue artistic goals.

While I place great importance on fundamentals through the use of harmonics, long-tones, and technical exercises, I'm far more interested in looking at the student as a whole, not just the flutist. My lessons are collaborations, working directly with the student to reach their unique individual goals. Whether you want to enter competitions, audition for all-state, or just keep up your chops, we will come up with a unique plan together! My lessons are built around the idea that we must be fully embodied in order to produce beauty, so compassion and patience play a big role.

For all lessons, I emphasize the importance of improvisation and intuitive play as a way of finding your own unique voice. A stable technique and beautiful sound are great building blocks, but I’m far more interested in hearing someone’s soul coming through in their playing!

I am currently accepting students in-person in Iowa City as well as virtually. I’m also willing to travel as far as Cedar Rapids! For more information like lesson times and rates, please contact me here so we can discuss working together towards your personal goals. I look forward to connecting!
