Why I teach the flute…
Having earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in flute performance with some of the best teachers, I have a lot to share about flute playing! I also have a lot to share about how to remain true to yourself as you pursue artistic goals.
My teaching philosophy is simple: I believe that when you tap into your own unique frequency, you have the ability to learn on an intellectual and emotional level. This applies to students of all ages, experiences and ability levels. All humans are musical beings, and my aim is to unlock the innate creative potential in each of my students. While I place great importance on fundamentals like tone, rhythm, technical facility, and applicable music theory, I also encourage my students to tap into their own voice through the use of free improvisation with a drone or even their favorite pop song! I’ve found in my own practice that this helps alleviate feelings of comparison to others and brings one closer to their authentic expression. It helps answer the question, “What do YOU sound like?”
A stable technique and beautiful sound are perfect building blocks, but I’m far more interested in hearing someone’s soul coming through in their playing! All of my lessons are collaborations, meeting the student where they’re at and working together to achieve their personalized goals. Lessons are also built around commitment to the fact that we must be embodied and grounded in order to produce beauty, so patience and compassion play a big role.
Are you in high school and wanting to audition for all state? An adult who’s passionate about playing for themselves and in their local flute choir? Something in between? Let’s talk!
I am currently accepting students in-person in Iowa City as well as virtually. I’m also willing to travel as far as Cedar Rapids! For more information like lesson times and rates, please contact me here so we can discuss working together towards your personal goals. I look forward to helping you along your musical journey.
